Labor Day

The first Monday of September — for the people who do the work.

What happened

The first Labor Day parade was held in New York City on 5 September 1882, organized by the Central Labor Union. It became a federal holiday in 1894. Most of the rest of the world marks labour on 1 May instead.

Why it stuck

Almost everything a child touches in a day was made, moved, or maintained by somebody. The holiday is an invitation to notice that.

What a family can do

Walk through the house and count the jobs it took to make one ordinary room possible.

1. List everything you used before breakfast. Who made each one?
2. The weekend had to be invented. Find out roughly when, and by whom.
3. Why does most of the world mark labour in May and America in September?
