Nobody recorded the date of the Nativity, and the earliest surviving note of it being kept on December 25 is a Roman almanac from the year 336. Why that date is genuinely argued over. One explanation is that it was placed near the winter solstice and the Roman feasts around it, Saturnalia and the birthday of the Unconquered Sun. The other is a calculation: some early Christians reckoned the conception to March 25 and counted nine months. Historians still disagree, and anyone who tells you it is settled is overstating. Almost everything else arrived far later — the decorated tree spread from German-speaking lands, the first commercial Christmas card was printed in London in 1843, and the modern Santa Claus was assembled in America from the Dutch Sinterklaas, the poem "A Visit from St Nicholas", and a century of illustrators.
It is the most heavily built-upon day in the calendar: layer after layer of custom, most of it younger than people assume, added by families rather than handed down from anywhere official. Which is also the useful part — you are allowed to add one, and in thirty years it will be what your children say their family always did.
What a family can actually do
Pick two or three things you will do every single year and do them in a bad year too. One dated ornament chosen by each child is the cheapest and best of them.
