In a great deal of Europe and Latin America the evening of the 24th, not the morning of the 25th, is the heart of Christmas: the meal, the gifts and the church service all belong to the night. That is older than it looks — days were once counted from sunset, so the eve genuinely was the start of the feast rather than the run-up to it. The English-speaking habit of putting everything into Christmas morning is the newer arrangement.
For children the waiting is the feeling they remember, not the unwrapping. An evening with a shape to it — a meal, a walk, a story, one small thing opened — turns the hardest night of the year to get through into the best one.
What a family can actually do
New pajamas, one book, something hot to drink, and a walk after dark when the streets have gone quiet. The same four things every year.
