My dearest …,
Something very important happened to you , and I could not let it pass without telling you how big it was. Your tooth came out. Up here, when that happens, a little bell rings — and your name lights up on my board in gold letters: .
I have been doing this job a very long time, so let me tell you something true that grown-ups sometimes forget. A tooth coming out is not a losing at all. It is a growing. It means you are turning into the taller, braver, cleverer you were always going to be.
So I came while your house was quiet, and I hovered a moment just to look at you. I left something small beneath your pillow — but the tooth is the real treasure. I am taking it home to my garden. We fairies decorate our gardens with the teeth we gather, set along the little paths and among the flowers, and when the moon rises the whole garden glows white and gold.
Now take good care of the brand-new tooth on its way. Brush it morning and night, even when you are extra sleepy. And keep being kind, — kindness is the ingredient we make the fairy dust from.

P.S. — If you find a tiny bit of sparkle on your pillow, or on your cheek, or somehow in your hair: that was me. It happens when I fly too fast. And I will always travel fast to your house.
